Left vs. Right - Why they will never get along

While listening to one of those famous talk radio shows last night, a thought was triggered in my mind that simply won't let go.

We constantly hear about partisanship, moderation, compromise and bilateral solutions... but tell me, when will our left-wingers and right-wingers ever be able to work together?

A few years ago, I thought that if a few key people would open their minds and listen to each other, many of the conservative and liberal differences could be minimized, and solutions reached to some of our large problems. However, now, I feel that this would be impossible.

The differences between the liberals and the conservatives in this country is actually based upon fundamental differences in what they believe in. Some examples are:

1. A fetus is not a "human" until it is born, vs. a fetus is a "human" from the point of conception. This difference seems minor when you read it, but the impact is millions of babies aborted each and every year in the United States.
2. Rehabilitation vs. Punishment - The thought that we are responsible for teaching criminals to be good citizens vs. the act of punishing people for evil things done. For example, men who sexually abuse girls under the age of ten for several years, than get 60 days in jail because the judge felt they were good citizens or whatever.... What happened to the believe that certain acts that we, as a society, have defined as crimes, MUST be punished?
3. Black and White vs. Gray - Standards are defined, and must be followed? or standards are defined but are simply a guideline which may be changed depending on your individual circumstances? Illegal immigrants get more rights/privileges than LEGAL immigrants, because they "are here because they are poor and desperate, and it's not THEIR fault!"

We are a country rapidly on the road to a revolution. The revolution may be peaceful, or it may become extremely bloody and violent. Until we start meaning what we say, and saying what we mean, than we are simply going to continue down this path. People MUST take responsibility for their actions, and must pay for the harm they do to others!

People MUST take responsibility for their actions,

But in our current cultural environment, teach Freedom no longer means freedom of choice. It really means freedom from responsiblity, and from the consequences of our bad decisions decisions.

Doesn't matter what we call this Leftist Duck:

Secular Progressives =
Moral Relativism =
Secular Humanism

It still all the same Leftist Duck. The freedom to make bad choices without consequence.

good post & observations. From comments I've heard from 90-100 year olds, at least for significant periods through history it has been like this in America (plenty of loyal subjects during the Revolution; our Civil War; etc...).

There is a battle going on for the heart, mind, and soul of our country.

We are drifting toward much less self-reliance, lee ability to think critically, and more nanny-state thinking. You don't need to be able to tell right from wrong if the state if doing the heavy mental lifting of sorting that out.

It is a dangerous drift that serves neither liberals nor conservatives. The libs can't see it though.

Keep up the writing, posting, etc...it will only get better if enough of us keep better ideas floating around the blogosphere, coffee house, beer joint and kitchen table.

It is well to concider that Truth cannot be possessed and with that, NO one ought to concider themselves uniquely capable of discerning/diseminating truth.
Truth, rather, possesses us, and is our strength and light SO LONG AS we use it for the purposes God has given.
When it becomes a battle axe or a stolen halo, it immediately becomes horns for our heads.
I say that as a caution.
It is felt right now in this nation that because "the left" has been so venal, that somehow "the right" must be...right.
If only Truth were so simple.
I hope that I am not drifting too much in this post-my main point is that the terms L and R have been so abused for so long and both entrenched positions have become so rotten it seems wise council to abandon them entirely in favor of more sturdy denominators; such as Righteous and unrighteous.
Another thing is certain, and that is if you think todays Republican party has anything to do with "Conservatism", please excuse yourself from further opinion. Your discernment mechanism is broken.
Fudamentally R and L actually exist and have place, but we are living through a very cruel period in history wherein it was decided that oil and water really COULD mix, and if we only forcefully use state aparatus and induce public belief, the Grand Synthesis that Hegel taught us would come about-and the eschaton immanentized, thereby avoided.
Men are men and women are women, RuPaul notwithstanding, they will NEVER be fused. They can live in A SORT OF harmony so long as God as in the picture, but will always fundamentally be at odds and in need of their (harmonic balancer) (that was an engine metaphor)
What disturbs most in our times is the fact that some peoples can never fuse, some cultures can never live together in peace-I dont really need to give any specific examples do I? Therefore the true path to peace is not open borders induced anarchy but a mature decision that we simply do not get along with some people, and they ought to stay on THEIR side of the line and build a world that is worth emulating-as our forefathers did.
